Box sorting at my local shop, the old way vs the new way

Used to flip through every long box at Golden Age Comics in Portland hunting keys one at a time, but after I found a hidden first appearance of a minor character buried in the dollar bin last March, I started asking the owner for his unprocessed stock and now I go straight to the fresh boxes before they hit the floor, has anyone else gotten better finds that way?

Dude, "hidden first appearance in the dollar bin" is the exact kind of thing that gets me hooked too. I started doing the same thing at my spot, asking the owner if they got any unopened short boxes in the back, and it's night and day compared to digging through the floor stuff. Last month I pulled a decent first print of a C-list villain that had just been sitting in a fresh box for like two days, and the owner didn't even know it was in there. The stuff that never hits the shelf is where all the weird, undervalued keys hang out, honestly. Once you get that taste of finding something before anyone else, you can't go back to flipping through the same worn-out long boxes, you just can't. It's like the difference between hunting and just browsing, and I'll take the hunt every single time.
