The library late fee I refused to pay taught me something weird

I always thought I was a rule follower, but last spring I let a book sit in my car for 11 days past its due date. The fine was just $3.50, but I got stubborn and decided to keep it out of principle because the library closed the hold desk at 5pm and I kept missing it. When I finally brought it back, the librarian said they had wiped all fines older than 30 days as a pilot program. I felt dumb for stressing, but also mad that my so-called integrity had no real weight here. The book was a biography on Nikola Tesla, and I read it cover to cover in those 11 days, which I would never have done otherwise. So my belief that I respect schedules got replaced by the fact that I secretly enjoyed breaking one. Has anyone else had a tiny rebellion turn out to be the better choice? It makes me question what other rules I hold for no reason.
