Just realized my $300 grinder is pointless because I've been buying stale beans this whole time
I was at this local roaster on Saturday and the guy behind the counter asked when my beans were roasted. I said I didn't know, I just grab whatever bag looks good off the shelf at the grocery store. He pulled one down and showed me the date stamp, it was 4 months old. I stood there feeling like a total idiot because I've been fussing over grinder settings and water temp for months while feeding it old beans. How long do you guys actually wait before you toss a bag, or am I the only one who never checked the date?
Man, that moment of standing there realizing the date stamp says 4 months is rough, and I bet a lot of people have been exactly where you are. Nobody tells you at the store that the roast date matters way more than the bag design or the fancy tasting notes on the front. Grocery shelves are the worst for this too, stuff can sit there for half a year before anyone buys it. I check the date on every bag now, and if there's no roast date printed at all I just leave it, because that usually means they're hiding something. For me anything past 3 or 4 weeks starts tasting flat and papery, and by two months it's just sad brown dust no matter how good your grinder is. You didn't waste the grinder though, now you get to actually hear what it can do with fresh beans.
