Took me 4 days to chase down a 0.003" taper on a shaft, turned out my tailstock was out of alignment
Kept blaming the tool and the feed and even swapped chucks before I threw an indicator on the tailstock quill. Anybody got a good trick for checking alignment without pulling the whole thing apart?
Had the same thing last year. I put a dead center in the headstock and one in the tailstock, brought them nose to nose and shined a light behind them. Any gap or shadow that isn't even means you're off. Then I took a test bar between centers and skimmed it with a sharp tool, miced both ends. That taper tells you which way to bump the tailstock. Mine was off about .002 over 6 inches, tweaked the set screws and it cleaned right up.
