Had to choose between a 1/4 inch end mill and a 3/8 inch for a weird pocket. Went with the 1/4. Bad call.

Honestly, it's just a pocket... not a bridge support. The smaller bit probably just took a few extra passes. Hardly a world-ending mistake.

Picking the wrong tool is the worst. I once tried to use a router bit for a job that really needed a dado blade... let's just say the project became kindling.

Actually a dado blade is for the table saw. Routers can do dados too though. Sounds like you just needed a bigger bit or a different setup.
