Dropped $340 on a Mitutoyo digital mic last year and it caught a 0.002" taper my old Starrett missed
Thought I was just paying for the name until I rechecked a shaft that kept getting rejected and found the anvil was worn on my old one. Anyone else run into a tool that paid for itself by catching just one bad batch?
Man, I gotta push back on this one. A worn anvil on your Starrett is not the same as the tool being bad, that's just a tool that needed service or replacement after years of use. The Mitutoyo didn't magically catch something the Starrett never could, it caught something your Starrett could no longer catch because it was out of spec. You could've sent that old mic in for repair or just checked the anvil with a gauge block and known it was shot. So really you paid $340 because you didn't keep up with your old tool, not because brand names are secretly worth it. I'm not saying Mitutoyo is bad, they're great, but this story sounds more like a maintenance issue than a reason to drop that kind of cash.
