A lead hand yelled "your Z is drifting, dummy" and it fixed my whole setup
Back in 2019 I was running a Haas VF2 at a shop in Rockford and fighting chatter on every 6061 pocket I cut, just cranking the feed down and blaming the tooling. The lead hand watched me for two minutes, tapped my Z axis and said "your Z is drifting, dummy, re-zero your tool after every warm up." Turns out I was setting tools cold and losing about 0.003 on the first hour, so every part after lunch was fine and every morning part was scrap. Now I zero on a warm spindle and run a test block before the first op, and my scrap on that cell dropped from like 8 parts a shift to almost nothing. Anybody else out there check drift on the older machines or is that just me being paranoid now?
