Wasted $120 on a carbon offset subscription that did nothing

I signed up for a monthly carbon offset plan last April after seeing an ad, thought I was doing something real. Six months in, I checked the project they funded and it was just a tree-planting scheme with zero verification, the trees died in a drought anyway. A friend who works in environmental policy showed me the actual reporting, and I realized my money went to marketing, not impact. I canceled it and now I only donate to local groups where I can see the work happen. Has anyone else found offset programs that are actually worth it, or are they all mostly hype?
