Put a brick in my toilet tank 6 months ago to cut water use, just checked the numbers
The problem was our water bill kept creeping up and I couldn't figure out where it was all going. A neighbor who works for the city water department mentioned that older toilets can flush 3.5 gallons a pop, and ours is from 1994. So I filled a mason jar with pebbles and dropped it in the tank, which sounds silly but it works by taking up space so less water goes down per flush. Our usage went from about 6,200 gallons a month to 5,100, which is roughly $14 saved each month on the bill. That adds up to $168 a year for doing basically nothing. I know it's small stuff compared to bigger changes, but it felt good to see it actually show up on paper. Has anyone else tried the jar or brick trick, and did you run into any issues with the flapper not sealing right?
