Last Tuesday in Phoenix felt like a glimpse of the future, and not in a good way

It was 115 degrees for the third day in a row, and the power grid alerts started at 2 PM. My neighbor, Maria, who's 78, had her AC cut out for two hours because of rolling brownouts. It was a brutal reminder that climate change isn't a far-off problem, it's breaking things right now. How are other people in hot places getting ready for this kind of stuff?

Ugh, that's rough. We keep a few battery-powered fans and a cooler with ice packs ready for when the AC struggles.

Remember my genius plan of just sleeping in the basement? Yeah, my cat claimed the cool spot first. Now I'm stuck upstairs with a frozen water bottle on my neck and a sad little desk fan that just blows hot air around. It feels like I'm being gently toasted. What do you do when your pet outsmarts your heat escape plan?

Smart move. We upgraded to a portable AC unit for the bedroom last year and it was a total game changer. Lets us at least sleep cool when the central air gives up.
