Hot take: my town banned gas leaf blowers in March and half my street bought battery ones, the other half just went back to rakes
Back in March, Maplewood passed a rule that gas blowers are done starting next spring, and I watched my neighbor Sal drop $300 on a battery one while the guy across from him just bought a $20 rake. Sal swears the battery lasts 25 minutes and he's done before it dies, but the rake guy says his yard looks the same and he saved the cash. I'm stuck in the middle here, is this a real win for cutting emissions or just a feel good rule that pushes people back to raking?
My uncle in Ohio went through the same thing when his city did a trade-in program, you bring in your old gas blower and get like 40 bucks off a battery one. He took the deal but then realized the battery only gets him through the front yard, so now he just does the back with a rake and calls it his workout. The part that gets me is that a lot of those battery packs end up in the trash after a few years anyway, so I'm not sure the emissions math is as clean as people want it to be. Meanwhile Sal's over there acting like he solved climate change because his blower doesn't smell like gas anymore. I lowkey respect the rake guy more, at least he's honest about just not wanting to spend the money.
