Unpopular opinion: my cousin's 1965 Mustang sat 14 months in a carport in Bakersfield and came out just fine
Last Tuesday my cousin finally pulled his 65 Mustang out of a Bakersfield carport where it sat uncovered for 14 months, and I went over expecting a rust bucket. I had nagged him the whole time about getting a real cover and crackin the windows, but he just threw a bedsheet over it and said good enough. We pulled the sheet off and honestly, other than some dust and one spider nest in the wheel well, the paint and chrome looked the same as the day he parked it. Now I feel dumb for yelling at him about my whole garage setup with the dehumidifier and the jack stands just for my 4 month winter storage. Anyone else in a dry climate notice rust just is not the problem everyone online makes it out to be?
Dry climate" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this post. Bakersfield gets like 6 inches of rain a year, so yeah, a car can sit there forever and nothing happens, but that says nothing about the guy in Ohio reading this and thinking he can skip the cover. Rust is a moisture problem, not a time problem, and your garage setup is not dumb just because your cousin got lucky in a desert.
