Question about using a car cover for my 68 Chevelle, a guy at a swap meet in Reno flipped my thinking
I used to swear by the cheap blue tarp over my 68 Chevelle because a cover cost too much. At the Reno swap meet in April, an old timer pointed at my paint and said the tarp was trapping moisture and scratching the roof every time the wind moved it. He showed me the inside of his cover, a soft flannel lining, and told me his car sat 6 winters in Ohio with zero rust. So I switched to a fitted breathable cover with a liner and my trunk lid stopped sweating, curious if anyone runs a dehumidifier in the garage on top of the cover or is that overkill.
Wow, six winters in Ohio with zero rust? That is hard to believe given how much salt and wet air that state throws at a car. I always figured a cover alone could not stop the damp from getting in, no matter how soft the lining was. I have heard the same thing about tarps trapping water underneath and rubbing the paint raw when the wind kicks up. Adding a dehumidifier on top of a good cover seems like a smart move if the garage is closed up tight. Without air moving through, the cover can only do so much before moisture just hangs there.
