I found out my block in Queens has its own weird historical marker
Was walking my dog last Tuesday and noticed this tiny plaque on a random brick building I've passed like a thousand times. Turns out that old laundromat on 48th Ave used to be a speakeasy during prohibition and Al Capone supposedly stopped there once. I checked the city's historical website and there's a whole 3 page PDF about it with newspaper clippings from 1927. Makes me wonder what other secrets are hiding in plain sight around here. Anyone else ever stumble on something like this in their own neighborhood?

Honestly that's wild how much stuff is just hiding in plain sight. I grew up near Ditmars and one day my dad pointed out this random brownstone and said it used to be a secret gay bar in the 50s. Like the door was painted black and you had to knock a special pattern. The whole city is basically built on layers of weird history nobody talks about. Tbh those little plaques are way more interesting than the big famous landmarks. Ngl I'd rather read a 3 page PDF about a laundromat speakeasy than go to the Statue of Liberty again.
