That customer in Akron who told me I was 'just a cleaner'
Tbh, I was finishing a sweep on his 30-foot flue last fall when he said it. He called the work 'simple' and asked why it cost so much. Honestly, explaining the code for clearances and the risk of a chimney fire didn't change his mind. Anyone else get that from a client who just doesn't get the trade?

Ever have someone watch you work and just not see the skill? Like they only see the brush, not the way you check for cracks or handle the rods on a steep roof. What do they think happens if you miss a spot?

What is it about a 30-foot tube of pure soot that makes people think it's an easy job? Sure, anyone can just wave a brush around, if they also enjoy risking a house fire and have a death wish for heights. Next time, maybe just hand him the brush and tell him to have fun with his "simple" creosote removal.

And yeah, I had a lady watch me clean out her dryer vent last spring and she actually said "Well that's just vacuuming, right?" Like ma'am, I'm hauling a 25 foot industrial hose into your crawlspace while balancing on a beam so your house doesn't burn down from lint buildup. She kept hovering and making comments about the price until I showed her the before and after pictures of the clog I pulled out. Did she finally get it? Nope, just asked if I could do her gutters next for free since I was already there.
