My brush head snapped off inside a 12x12 flue in a 1920s house this morning.

The old clay liner was way more uneven than it looked from below. Anyone have a good trick for fishing out a broken steel ferrule without dropping more stuff down there?

Uneven clay liner" is just how old houses are, always hiding their real problems.

Yeah, those old clay liners are never straight. I once spent an hour fishing out a dropped flashlight with a hook made from a coat hanger.

That coat hanger trick is a classic move, @michael669. It reminds me of the time I had to get creative with duct tape and a broom handle to reach a lost phone. Old houses just force you into becoming a weird kind of engineer.
