My old manager said my shift notes were useless, and I fought him on it for months
I worked nights at a group home in Dayton for 2 years and I used to write these long shift notes, like a full page on every resident. My manager pulled me aside and said the day staff never reads past the first 3 lines, so all my detail was wasted. I was mad about it for weeks because I felt like he was calling my work worthless. But I started writing 4 bullet points at the top with the stuff that actually mattered, like med changes and who was sick, and suddenly people were replying to my notes and asking me stuff. Did anyone else get feedback like this that stung at the time but turned out right?
A full page per resident is a lot, but saying day staff never read past 3 lines is just not true. Some of us actually read the whole note because the small stuff tells you how the night really went. Your bullet points fix is smart though, it pulls people in so they get the big stuff fast.
