Why does nobody talk about moisture testing before stretching carpet in a basement
Was installing berber in a finished basement in Ann Arbor and the pad felt a little cool but I figured it was fine. Two weeks later the homeowner called, seams were puckering and the whole thing smelled musty. Pulled it back up and the slab was reading 9 pounds on my meter, way over the limit. Now I keep a moisture meter in the truck and check every concrete floor before I even unroll, has anyone else gotten burned like this?
How often do you really run into a 9 pound slab in a finished basement though? Not saying you did anything wrong, and yeah that number is gonna wreck any install. But in my area most finished basements have been under heat and AC for years, so the concrete dries out plenty. I check slab moisture when something feels off, a cold floor, a musty smell, visible stains. Pulling out a meter on every single basement job would slow me down and I've never had a callback like yours. Your case sounds like a house with no vapor barrier under the slab or bad drainage outside, which is a whole separate problem. Just saying the meter check isn't always the thing that saves you.
