That vegan bakery in Portland that got canceled over a tip dispute still has amazing cookies
I stopped into Sweetpea Baking on Hawthorne last Saturday and honestly their raspberry danish is still top notch. The owner got dragged online in 2022 for allegedly skimming from the tip pool but I asked three current employees if it was true and two said it was a misunderstanding blown way out of proportion by an ex-staffer. Do you guys think a bakery can be separated from its drama or should I just find a new spot and move on from this?

The last time I was in Portland I grabbed a slice of their vegan carrot cake and it was so good I almost cried. People act like one online scandal defines a place forever but I've seen way worse stuff at "clean" bakeries that never got any heat. Honestly if the current workers are cool and the food's that good, I'm still gonna stop in when I'm in town.

Oh for real, totally agree. I went there last month for the first time since all that drama went down and I felt kinda guilty at first but man, that chocolate croissant was literally perfect. Honestly I think most of the internet just loves to jump on a hate train without knowing the full story. I talked to one of the bakers while I was waiting and she said the same thing, it was mostly just one disgruntled ex worker making stuff sound way worse than it was. Life's too short to miss out on good pastries over some messy drama from years ago. Plus like half the time these "canceled" places turn out to be run by normal people who just got unlucky online. Keep going if the food is good, I say.

Respectfully, I gotta disagree here. The tip pool stuff is a big deal to me because it's about people's actual wages, not just some drama. If the owner was playing games with tips, that says something about how they treat their staff even if the pastries are good. Two employees saying it was a misunderstanding doesn't totally clear it up for me either, you know? A lot of workers won't badmouth their boss to a customer face to face. I guess I'd rather spend my money at a place where I don't have to wonder if the folks making my food are getting paid right.
