My aunt in Hamilton asked why I still keep a paper RRSP folder, and now I'm not so sure I have a good answer
So my aunt Joan is 74 and lives in Hamilton, and last weekend she asked me why I still keep a paper folder with my RRSP statements in a drawer when everything's online. I started to explain how I like seeing the numbers on paper, and then she pulled out her own folder from 1998 and showed me her GIC rates from back then, like 5.5 percent, and I just went quiet. She said the bank used to mail her statements and she'd sit at the kitchen table with a coffee and actually read them, line by line. I realized I haven't really looked at my statements in a long time, I just check the app balance and move on. She also pointed out she caught a fee on her account in 2004 that way, a $25 charge she never agreed to, and got it refunded. Now I'm wondering if reading paper is why she noticed and my scrolling is why I don't. I'm not saying I'll switch everything to paper, but I did print out last quarter's statement. Anyone else find they catch stuff on paper they miss on a screen?
