Update: the guy at the REI counter in Boise talked me out of the ultralight pad
Last April I went in to grab a 13 oz inflatable pad for a 3 night loop in the Sawtooths, and the guy behind the counter asked how I sleep. I said fine, and he asked if fine meant waking up 4 times a night. He talked me into a heavier 22 oz pad with a higher R value instead, said the weight savings mean nothing if I toss and turn. I figured he was just upselling me until night 2 on a 28 degree night when my buddy on his fancy thin pad was up shivering and I slept straight through. Now I'm second guessing my whole pack list since that pad ate 9 oz of my weight budget. Has anyone else had a gear shop employee talk them out of the cool lighter option and been glad they listened?
