The day I learned my tent stakes were always wrong in Colorado

I camped near Estes Park last June and got hammered by wind all night. My tent held up, but every stake was bent like crazy, and I kept blaming the Rocky Mountain soil. Then a guy two sites over walked by and pointed out I was driving them at the wrong angle, straight down instead of leaning away from the tent. I'd been camping for 8 years like that, and suddenly all those wobbling nights made sense. Anyone else have a gear habit that took them a decade to fix?
