That $80 Camp Stove From the REI Garage Sale Almost Ruined My Trip to Moab
Three weeks ago I grabbed a Jetboil Flash from the used gear rack at REI in Denver for $80. The guy at the counter said it was returned once and looked fine, so I took it home. Last weekend in Moab I fired it up for coffee at 6am and the igniter clicked but nothing happened. I tried a new fuel can and still nothing. Turns out the previous owner had stripped the threads on the burner base and it was leaking gas the whole time. I had to drive 40 minutes into town to buy a $15 replacement part. Has anyone else bought used stoves and had issues like this, or did I just get unlucky?
Learned the hard way to always test used stoves in the parking lot before I leave the store. I bring a fuel can, screw it on, and listen for any hiss around the threads. Once I caught a leak that way on a PocketRocket and just walked it right back inside for a refund. Now I also check the igniter and watch for a steady blue flame before I trust it on a trip. Sucks you had to drive 40 minutes for a $15 part, but at least you figured it out before something worse happened.
