Vent: my $12 heat gun melted a ribbon cable on a customer's 5D Mark III, so I'm done guessing temp settings

Happened last Tuesday on a simple grip replacement, and now I'm out $85 for a replacement cable plus an hour of apology. Does anyone actually use a thermocouple or do you just wave it around like an idiot and hope?
