Question about cheap ultrasonic cleaners vs the $180 one I finally bought for shutter assemblies
Ngl I put off buying a real ultrasonic cleaner for two years because the $40 one from Amazon seemed fine for shutter blades and small screws. Last week I finally grabbed a 6 liter unit with a heater for $180 and the difference on a sticky Copal shutter from a Yashica Mat was night and day. The cheap one just vibrated the dirt around and left a film on the blades, while the heated tank at 60C actually lifted old lube out of the pivots in about 4 minutes. I ran the same shutter through twice in the old unit and it still dragged at 1/125, but one pass in the new one and it snapped clean at every speed. I also stopped losing tiny springs because the basket in the new unit has a finer mesh. Small win but I genuinely felt like I leveled up on this one repair. Has anyone else noticed their cheap cleaner was actually making things worse, or did I just get a bad unit?
Did you ever try running the cheap one with heat? I'm wondering if the temp was doing most of the work and the vibration was just along for the ride. Because if so, maybe the fix for the old unit is just a $15 coffee mug warmer under the tank, which would've saved you $180.
