Pulled the front element off a $40 pawn shop 50mm last spring, soaked the glass in hydrogen peroxide and ammonia for two days, sealed it back with a hair dryer on low, and that lens has shot 3 weddings since with no spots, so I want to know if anyone else figures the fungus dies once the glass dries out instead of crawling back in.
This is the same thing that happens with mold in a house. People freak out and rip out drywall but if you just fix the water leak and dry it out, the mold stops growing and never comes back. Fungus needs moisture to live, period. Your lens sat in a dry Tucson garage which is basically a desert, so of course it stayed clear. Same reason bread gets moldy in a plastic bag but turns into a rock if you leave it on the counter. I bet half the people scrubbing lenses with UV lights and specialty kits are just wasting money when all they really need is to stop storing glass in a damp basement. The spores are probably still on your glass but they are dead or dormant with nothing to feed on.
