Rant: Lost a whole Saturday rewiring a house in Portland because the previous guy used phone jacks for coax

Still finding splitter cables spliced like lamp cords years later. Has anyone else walked into a job that straight up looked like a DIY nightmare from the 90s?

Used to think old phone wire could work fine for data in a pinch, but after finding those lamp cord splices in a rewire I'd never go back. That junk just makes everything twice as hard to fix.

Oh man, tell me about it. I actually saw a post the other day from a guy who found old thermostat wires being used for ethernet in a house built in the 80s. People back then just used whatever they had lying around, I guess. @kelly.charlie is right about lamp cord splices being a total pain, I've pulled that stuff out of walls where the insulation was just crumbling off, making a whole mess of the job. Makes you wonder how some of these places ever got internet in the first place.

Can't believe people actually used thermostat wires for ethernet, @kelly.charlie that's wild.
