Old timer at the supply house made me ditch my toner routine

Was grabbing a box of RG6 and compression fittings at the distributor in Akron when this retired installer, must have been 70, watched me test a run with my toner and probe. He just said 'son, you're listening for a click, but you should be looking for the lights.' I had no idea what he meant. He walked me over to a spool and showed me how he sweeps a cable with a time domain reflectometer. Took me about 20 minutes at his truck to get the basics. Now I'm renting one for a tricky underground run that's been giving me ghost signals for two days. Anyone else switched from toning to a TDR for buried lines, or is that overkill for residential work?
