Spent $340 on a magnetic door catch jig when a 2 cent shim did the same thing
Back when I started in my uncle's shop in Toledo we just tapped hinges in by hand and eyeballed the gaps, and honestly it worked fine. Last spring I got sold on one of those fancy magnetic jigs for drilling concealed hinge cups, dropped $340 on it plus another $60 in bits. Ran it on a set of maple uppers and the cups came out wandering maybe 1/16 off center because the jig flexed on the stile. Turns out the fix was a scrap of business card shimmed under my old drill guide, took me ten seconds. Anybody else buy a gadget that got beat by a piece of trash off the floor?
That maple stile sounds like it was crowned or twisted and no jig on earth will fix that, the flexing was probably your bit walking in hard grain. A $340 jig that needs a business card to work right is just a $340 paperweight, I'd have sent it back.
