My old boss in Toledo told me to lock in a 5 year business fiber contract in 2019, and now I'm stuck watching everyone else get faster speeds for less
Back in 2019 our shop was on a 5 year deal with a local provider, 100 Mbps for $289 a month, and my boss at the time promised me locking in long would protect us from price hikes. For the first year it felt fine, then the pandemic hit and suddenly half our crew was working from home and that 100 Mbps felt like a garden hose. Meanwhile a competitor down the street got 500 Mbps for $180 in 2021, and last month I got a flyer for 1 gig fiber at $150 with no contract. I called our rep about maybe bumping our plan and he basically laughed and pointed at the signature page. We still have 14 months left on it and I check the bill every month like it might magically change. Anyone else ever locked into a long business contract and regret it, or did yours actually work out?
Man, reading this made my stomach drop because that is a real trap and the rep laughing about it is just cold. Long contracts only protect you if the market stays still, and the market never stays still, speeds go up and prices go down pretty much every year. Locking in for five years on a connection is like signing a lease on a car right before they announce a cheaper, better model. The part that stings most is you did what you were told and now you eat the cost while the shop down the street wins for doing nothing special. Fourteen months is a countdown at least, so mark that end date now and start getting quotes from other providers a few months before it hits. Next time keep it to two years max, or month to month if you can, so you never get stuck holding the short end again.
