The day the freezer died and I found out my budget was the hero
Last July my fridge gave up at 2pm on a Saturday, right when I had a whole freezer full of meal prep and a chest freezer full of venison. I panicked, called a repair guy who quoted $280 just to look at it, and that felt like a punch. Instead, I grabbed a cooler, some ice from the gas station, and spent an hour moving everything to a friend's spare fridge. Total fix ended up being a $45 relay part and a YouTube video, and the cooler ice cost me $12. The real win was that I had a $500 emergency fund set aside just for appliance stuff, so I didn't have to touch my regular savings or eat rice and beans for a month. Do you guys keep a separate repair fund or just roll it into your general emergency pot?

Funny you mention this, I had nearly the same setup after my compressor went out two winters ago. I keep about $400 in a separate envelope just for the big appliances, and it saved me from putting the whole repair on a credit card. Your $500 number is solid, just make sure you put the receipt in the envelope so you know what you actually spent when it comes time to refill it.
