Picked the bulk beans over pre-ground at Costco and saved $40

Had to choose between a 2lb bag of pre-ground coffee for $18 or the whole bean bulk bin at $9 a pound. I grabbed the whole beans and a $15 hand grinder off Amazon. Three months later I'm still using that same bag and the coffee tastes way better than the stale pre-ground stuff. Anyone else find switching to whole beans just makes your morning routine feel less wasteful?

Heard this exact story from my buddy Mark last week. He walked into Costco, saw the price difference, and grabbed the whole beans on a whim. His wife was annoyed at first cause she thought it would be extra work in the morning. But he got that same cheap hand grinder and now he swears the coffee smells like actual coffee instead of that dusty cardboard smell. He told me even his picky mother in law noticed the difference when she visited.

So Mark got the same $15 grinder I started with after I had this exact argument with my wife about whole beans. That grinder actually does the job fine once you figure out the right setting - I usually go about 12-14 clicks from the tightest setting for a drip maker. The big thing nobody warns you about is that you gotta use the coffee within about 2 weeks once you grind it, whole beans in a sealed container last way longer than that. I keep my beans in a mason jar on the counter and just grind enough for the morning pot, takes maybe 45 seconds. That dusty cardboard smell is exactly right - that's what happens when pre-ground coffee sits around for months oxidizing.
