Was dead wrong about hostel dorms after that guy in Berlin set me straight
A dude at a hostel in Berlin told me private rooms were a waste and I'd save $40 a night in dorms. I tried it and met travelers who actually showed me the free walking tours and cheap eats I'd missed before.

That part about "travelers who actually showed me the free walking tours and cheap eats I'd missed before" really hits home. I had a similar experience in Prague where I'd been doing the overpriced tourist stuff for two days until I moved to a dorm and met a Dutch girl who took me to this little family-run restaurant outside the main square. You get this kind of insider knowledge from other travelers that you just can't find in a guidebook, and it saves you more than the $40 on the room.

My buddy had the exact same thing happen in Rome. He was stuck eating at tourist trap places until he switched to a dorm and this older Italian guy in his bunk showed him a spot where locals actually eat. He said that one meal alone made up for every snoring roommate he ever had.

The 40 euros I saved in a Paris dorm last year ended up costing me 60 euros because someone stole my debit card out of my bag while I was in the shower. You can get plenty of cheap eats and free walking tours from apps and YouTube without trusting a random stranger you just met. Not everyone in a hostel is there to help you out, some people are just looking to scam a tired tourist. Plus you lose all your privacy and have to listen to some dude snore all night. I'll pay the extra cash for peace of mind every time.
