Rant: My 'free' walking tour in Prague ended up costing me $50

The guide spent the whole time steering us into his friend's overpriced cafes and gift shops. I learned the hard way that 'free' often means a high-pressure sales pitch. Has anyone found a truly no-strings-attached tour in a major city?

Yeah, the "high pressure sales pitch" part is so real. I fell for one of those in Rome and ended up with a ten euro bottle of weird lemon cream that tasted like soap. I guess my free tour actually cost me ten bucks and a life lesson. Now I just look up a route online and walk it myself, pretending I know what I'm looking at. It's free and the only person pressuring me to buy a souvenir is me.

It's the same thing with those pop-up shops in malls that rope you in with a "free sample." Suddenly you're getting a full facial and a guilt trip about your pores. The whole model is just making normal public spaces feel like a transaction. I've started to notice it at farmers markets too, where a simple "just looking" gets you a five minute speech on heirloom tomatoes. Makes you want to just stay home and look at pictures of Italy instead.

My strategy is to just look panicked and say I'm late for a bus. Works every time, even if the bus stop is miles away. I'm basically a professional escape artist at this point.
