I saved $830 on a 9 day trip to Lisbon by skipping hotels, but my buddy says I ruined the trip
So my friend and I did Lisbon for 9 days back in March and I booked us a hostel dorm for $22 a night instead of the $115 hotel rooms he wanted, which saved us around $830 total. He says the shared bathroom and 6am bunk noise killed the whole vibe and that a real vacation means a private room. I say that $830 paid for our train to Sintra, all our meals, and a day trip to Cascais, and I'd trade a noisy hallway for that any time. We're still arguing about it over text. Where do you all draw the line, is a dorm a smart hack or just being cheap?
Honestly your buddy is being a little dramatic about this. A dorm with a shared bathroom is not some kind of ruined trip, it's just a cheaper place to sleep, and you two still got to see Sintra and Cascais and eat real meals because of that money. The 6am bunk noise thing is annoying for sure, but that's a small price to pay for a train ride and a whole day trip. I get where he's coming from about wanting a private room, some people just can't sleep in a room with strangers, but calling the whole vibe dead over it feels like a lot. You saved $830, that's not being cheap, that's being smart with your money. If he cared that much about a private room he could've offered to pay the difference himself instead of complaining after the fact.
