Guy at a hostel in Prague told me to ditch my packing cubes
I used to swear by packing cubes. Thought they kept everything neat and organized. Then this older traveler at a hostel in Prague said I was just carrying more fabric, not less. I tried his method of just rolling everything loose into my backpack. Saved about 15% of space and stopped wasting time fussing with zippers. Has anyone else dropped a system after someone called it out?

My friend Kyle was obsessed with his packing cubes for years. He brought like 6 of them to Japan last spring and spent the whole trip annoyed because he couldn't find his phone charger in any of them. A local in a Tokyo capsule hotel watched him struggle and just said "why do you carry bags inside your bag?" Kyle literally gave the cubes away the next morning, rolled everything up, and said his pack felt half as heavy.

Honestly that local was onto something... we overthink packing so much we forget the point is simplicity not organization.
