Faced a choice between a hostel in central Paris or a cheap hotel near the airport

I picked the airport hotel for 40 euros a night, figuring I'd just take the train in. The RER ticket was 11 euros each way, so my daily travel cost added up fast. Has anyone found a good middle ground for Paris that doesn't break the bank?

Check the RER price again, it's a flat fee for the whole trip.

Oh man, flat fee you say? That explains why I spent like twenty minutes last time trying to figure out the zone pricing like a total math problem. I was over here with a notepad calculating my route like a tourist planning a bank heist. Just tap and go, my brain was not ready for that kind of simplicity.

Actually, the flat fee thing is only for trips inside Paris. If you're going to the airports or further out zones, the price does change based on distance. I got caught by that going to CDG last year.
