Showerthought: people keep saying beans are the cheapest protein but they forget the $9 bag of onions, peppers, and garlic it takes to make them edible
A dry bag of pinto beans is like $1.50 at the HEB on South Congress and everyone acts like that's the whole meal, but I burned through a whole onion, half a head of garlic, a jalapeno, and a can of rotel just to get a pot that didn't taste like wet dirt. What's your actual cost per serving once you count the stuff that makes beans worth eating?
I did the math on my last pot of black beans and it came to about 85 cents a serving, but that's counting the onion, cumin, and lime I threw in. The trick for me was buying the frozen diced onion and pepper mix at Walmart for like $2, saves chopping time and nothing goes bad. A little bouillon cube does most of the heavy lifting on flavor for cheap too.
