A 30-year mason in Tucson told me my joints were too clean, best advice I ever got

I was working a commercial job near the University of Arizona and this old timer walks up, watches me for a bit. I was proud of my lines, crisp and uniform. He just shook his head and said "kid, those look machine-made." Then he showed me how he works his joints with a slicker and a bit of a push, gives them that hand tooled shadow that catches light different. Took me about 2 weeks to get the feel right. Now my work has that slight variation that customers actually comment on. I used to rush to get the rake done clean first pass. Anyone else get told their work was too perfect and had to unlearn it?
