The $6 thrift store globe that made me stop trusting my map app

I bought an old globe in Portland for 6 bucks and noticed the Caspian Sea is drawn way smaller on it than my GPS shows now. Comparing the two made me realize how much cartography shifts with politics, and now I double-check any map data older than 5 years. Anyone else find old maps more reliable for certain regions?

Damn, that’s a solid find for 6 bucks. Tbh, old globes and maps are usually more honest about political borders than people think. I’ve got a 1980s atlas and it still shows the Soviet Union, which trips me out every time I look at it. The Caspian Sea thing is wild though, I never would’ve caught that. Honestly, the best move is to cross-check any old map with satellite images before you rely on it for anything serious. And don’t even get me started on how many place names have changed in the last decade, it’s like a whole different world every few years.
