Kauai island tour made me hate resort hopping
I did the full circle island drive last month, all 90 miles around Kauai. Every single stop was a beach or a lookout packed with people taking the same photo for Instagram. But the real Kauai showed up when I got lost near Waimea Canyon and talked to a local farmer selling mangoes. He told me the resorts are fake, the real island is the west side where the roads end and nobody bothers to look. I paid $180 for a tour that showed me nothing I couldn't see from a parking lot. Why do we keep paying to see the same crowded spots when the actual culture is 20 minutes past the turnoff sign? Has anyone else ditched the guided stuff and just gone exploring blind?
