The day my entire collection of rare ferns got cooked by a broken thermostat
It was a Tuesday in early October, and I came home to a greenhouse that felt like a sauna. The digital readout on the thermostat was stuck at 105 degrees. I had about 15 different fern varieties in there, including a Bird's Nest Fern I'd been nursing for three years and a Blue Star Fern from a special grower. Everything was wilted and crispy. The worst part was the smell, like cooked spinach. I spent the whole next day trying to salvage anything, but only two pots showed any green at the base. I'm still mad at myself for not having a backup thermometer. Has anyone else had a total climate control failure wipe out a chunk of their plants?

Honestly, that's just natural selection at work.

That's a pretty cold way to look at it. Real people are hurting out there. Calling it natural selection ignores all the real problems that cause bad situations. It's not always someone's fault when things go wrong. Life is more complicated than that. Have some heart, man.

Totally agree, life's way more messy than that.
