The old binder in Portland who made me redo a signature 3 times, still bugs me
I was at a workshop in Portland last spring and this older guy named Ray watched me sew a section and just shook his head, didn't say a word. He took my kettle stitch apart right there and said the thread should sit behind the knot, not on top of it, then handed it back without explaining why. I redid that same signature 3 times before it clicked. Anyone else had a teacher who taught by taking your work apart instead of talking?
The "thread should sit behind the knot, not on top of it" thing is real, I read a whole thread on a bookbinding forum about that once and half the people swore by it and the other half said it didn't matter. Ray taking your work apart without a word is brutal but I bet you never forget it now.
