My book club's 50-page rule turned into a 5-hour argument

We used to just vote on whatever sounded good, but last month Georgia insisted we all read at least 50 pages before the meeting and two members showed up with zero. Has anyone else had a participation rule backfire that badly, or did we just pick the wrong crowd?
