Why does nobody warn you that re-tubing a boiler the old way can wreck a whole turnaround
I used to roll every tube by feel, just counting seconds on the gun and moving to the next hole. Did it that way for years. Then on a unit in Gary, Indiana, we had 14 tubes weeping on hydro and the outage was already 2 days behind. A guy named Roy from the night shift showed me a torque log he kept on a clipboard, tube by tube, pass by pass. I laughed at it at first. But we re-rolled those 14 holes with his numbers and not one of them leaked on the second hydro. Now I write down every roll and check it against the last job. Still feel dumb about the tubes I wasted. Any of you keep a roll log or is that just a Roy thing?
Man, I feel that. I rolled tubes by counting seconds for years too and had a hydro come back with weepers that cost us a whole extra shift. Now I keep a little notebook with the numbers on every job and it's saved my butt more than once.
