Old flux vs the new paste, not even close

Back in 2004 I was a helper on a big drum job in Gary, Indiana and we used that old liquid flux with the brush cap. Stuff was messy, dripped everywhere, but man it bit into the scale like nothing else. Last week I grabbed a new paste from the supply house thinking it'd be similar, and I fought with a seam for an hour before breaking out the old formula I still keep in a coffee can. Has anyone else noticed the new stuff just doesn't cut through heavy oxidation, or is it just me?

Reminds me of trying to weld a rusty gate with a new rod and the flux just flaked off like dandruff. Had to wire brush the whole thing twice and go back to the 6011s.
