Watched a new player win our game night by ignoring the rulebook completely.
We were playing that complex train game, Ticket to Ride Europe. She just connected cities that looked close on the map, didn't even look at her route cards. Won by 15 points. Made me realize I get so stuck on the 'right' strategy I forget to just play. Anyone else have a game where the obvious move isn't the best one?

That part about getting stuck on the 'right' strategy hits home. I see this in Carcassonne all the time. People focus so hard on building one huge city that they miss easy points from just finishing small roads and fields quickly.

Yeah, that "easy points" thing reminds me of an article about sunk cost in games.

It's like people get obsessed with the perfect plan and miss the small wins right in front of them. You see it with diets where someone wants the perfect routine but skips a healthy snack because it's not part of the big plan. Sometimes just taking the easy points is the smartest move.
