The 40-minute setup at Gen Con that made me ditch my big box games
Last year at Gen Con I pulled out my copy of a heavy euro game with like 300 wooden pieces. Took me 40 minutes just to sort tokens and set up the board. Meanwhile the table next to us had a group playing a card game and they finished two rounds before I even started. That moment stuck with me. I used to love those huge games, the ones where you need a folding table just for the player boards. But after that trip I started selling off the giants and grabbed a bunch of mid-weight games that play in an hour or less. My shelf looks way less impressive now but I actually get games to the table three times a week instead of once a month. Theres still a part of me that misses the spectacle of a massive board with miniatures and chits everywhere. But honestly, who has the time at a con or even at home on a weeknight? I know some people live for the 3 hour epic and I respect that. Has anyone else had a moment at a convention or game night where they just looked at the setup and thought, nah, Im done with this? Or do you think the big games are worth the pain?
