My friend's 45-minute house rule rant made me question everything

So my buddy Dave spent a whole game night last Friday complaining that my group's house rules for Settlers of Catan were 'killing the soul' of the game, and honestly I laughed it off at first. But then he showed me how we'd turned trading into a 10-minute negotiation every single time, and I started thinking maybe he had a point about us overcomplicating things. Does your group lean toward strict rulebook or go wild with house rules, and has anyone ever flipped your opinion mid-game?

Dave's right that every game group slowly builds rules like rust on a car, until the original fun gets buried.
