My first mini painting attempt looked like a toddler meltdown, here's what I do now

Back in March I sat down with a $25 paint set and a bag of Reaper minis, thinking I'd knock out a goblin in one night. It came out with globby blue armor and eyes that looked like he'd been crying for three days straight. I tried dry brushing after watching one YouTube video and just smeared brown everywhere, the highlights I wanted turned into dark streaks I had to patch over. Six months later I finally slowed down, started with a wet palette I built from a Tupperware and paper towels, and did two thin coats on every single layer instead of going heavy. The difference is night and day, my last orc actually has a face that reads as angry instead of confused. Turns out the paint itself was never the issue, it was me rushing past the base coat like it was a chore. Has anyone else had a moment where they realized their technique was the whole problem and swapped brushes or styles because of it? I'm curious if a specific tutorial or habit finally clicked for you too.
